The Division of Safety and Risk Services offers trainings to help individuals, families, and work groups prepare for, respond to, and recover from different emergency situations on campus. Upcoming trainings are listed on the Resource Hub.
Available Trainings Include:
Emergency and Disaster Preparedness - This broad training covers natural hazard risks, mitigation efforts across campus, and personal preparedness measures we can all take to improve our resilience.
Active Threat - Learn about the warning signs of violent behavior, prevention resources, law enforcement activity, and preparedness measures on campus.
De-Escalation - This training covers the basics of de-escalation, common sources of conflict, recognizing unsafe situations, including safety planning and resources on campus for addressing difficult interactions, and practicing proactive, purposeful actions.
Situational Awareness - Learn about situational awareness and how to be more prepared to respond. Review emergency response resources, initial response steps, emergency notifications, and campus resources.
Violence Prevention and Active Shooter Training - This training covers potential warning signs for violent behavior, information about law enforcement response and capabilities for incidents of violence, overview of preparedness activities at the campus wide level, and steps that individuals and departments can take to be better prepared.
Self- Defense
There are multiple self-defense trainings provided by Emergency Management, UOPD, and PE and Recreation.
Pepper Spray - This 90-minute training covers the basics of pepper spray and provides an opportunity to practice using it in a safe environment. Participants who complete this training receive free pepper spray.
Personal Safety and Self Defense - This 90-minute, interactive training incorporates risk awareness and basic self-defense techniques.
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.)- Presented by UOPD in collaboration with the Substance Abuse Prevention Program, R.A.D. is designed to provide students with information and effective, self-defense tactics that may prevent or repel physical attacks against women. R.A.D. seeks to educate and instill confidence via three teaching methods: risk reduction principles, physical defensive techniques, and dynamic simulation. R.A.D.'s objective is to develop and enhance self-defense options for women.
PEMA 115 Self Defense - The three A’s of Self Defense: Awareness, Assessment and Action. The main theme is prevention. Work with a partner in class to create different situations for physical response.
PEMA 116 Womens Self Defense + Lab - In a holistic approach to self-defense and sexual assault prevention, this course teaches both physical and verbal strategies and techniques. Physical skill content includes the three A’s of self defense: awareness, assessment, and action. The awareness and empowerment content includes boundary setting, de-escalation, verbal strategies, assertiveness, and healthy relationship skills. Course format: two weekly activity sessions and one weekly empowerment session.
PEMA 399 Women's Self Defense II - In a holistic approach to self-defense and sexual assault prevention, this course teaches both physical and verbal strategies and techniques. Physical skill content includes the three A’s of self defense: awareness, assessment, and action. The awareness and empowerment content includes boundary setting, de-escalation, verbal strategies, assertiveness, and healthy relationship skills. Course format: two weekly activity sessions and one weekly empowerment session.
