Fire Safety

Make a Plan

  • Review your building's evacuation routes and practice using them.
  • Identify what types of fire systems are in your building and understand how they are activated.

Take Action

If something is on fire, or for a building emergency:

  • Use the nearest pull station to activate the fire alarm.
  • Call 9-1-1 and communicate the details that you know.
  • Evacuate the room or building.
  • Use a fire extinguisher for small fires only.*

Before using a fire extinguisher make sure that you:

  • Have called 9-1-1 or pulled the fire alarm.
  • Have been trained to use the extinguisher.
  • Have an evacuation route planned.

If trapped by smoke or fire:

  • Stay low and try to cover your mouth with a wet cloth.
  • Find a room where you can seal the cracks under the door and call 9-1-1.
  • If near a window, open it but do not break it. Wave or hang something outside to alert fire personnel.

If clothing is on fire:

  • Stop, drop, and roll to smother flames.
  • Drench with water from a safety shower, drench hose, or other source.
  • Seek medical attention for all burns and injuries.

Report all fires to UOPD (541)346-2919, including those that have been extinguished.

Fire Extinguishers

If you have been trained and it is safe to do so, you may attempt to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher. Attempt to extinguish only small fires and make sure you have a clear escape path.

If you have not been trained to use a fire extinguisher you must evacuate the area.

Any fire extinguisher that has been used, even if it wasn’t fully discharged, needs to be reported to the UO Fire Marshal Group so a replacement fire extinguisher can be provided.
