Public Event

Join us Wednesday, April 4th at 7:00 pm for a public talk by Kristina Anderson. The talk is entitled: "Safety is Personal: Lessons Learned as a Survivor of the Virginia Tech Tragedy." Your Summit badge will serve as your ticket. If you have guests that would like to attend, please use this link to request additional tickets. 

Ms. Anderson will share a candid, first-hand account of her personal experience, the journey towards recovery, and her mission to educate others in how to take personal accountability to create active threat response plans, as well how to communicate the importance of violence prevention within our institutions of learning and greater communities

 

National DRU Network Summit 

Since 2005 the DRU Network has offered a simple yet effective means to increase communication, coordination, and collaboration between campuses to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, continue operations during, and recover from natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other human-caused crises or disasters. The 2018 National DRU Summit will build upon that historical framework by offering participants new tools, resources, and ideas for making campuses more disaster resilient. The Summit will feature presentations by higher education experts and thought leaders, as well as peer-to-peer discussions, workgroups, and networking sessions to help you advance the concept of resilience on your campus. 

The 2018 National DRU Summit agenda will include:  

  • Opening plenary address by John Vargo, Executive Director of Resilient Organizations on “What is Resilience?”
  • Survivor panel focusing on long-term impacts following catastrophic incidents. Panelists include:
    • Kristina Anderson, VT shooting survivor and Executive Director of the Koshka Foundation for Safe Schools
    • Jennifer Bornemann, Commander, United States Public Health Service
    • Vanessa Becker, Former Chair Person, Umpqua Community College Board of Trustees and Member, Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Committee
  • Overview of Strategic Doing, a collaborative and iterative approach to strategic planning that can be applied to campus resilience efforts.
  • A session on Unity of Purpose - how to build productive multi-disciplinary teams designed to problem solve in today's fast pasted higher education environment, including lessons learned from a number of campuses.    
  • Four interactive small-group activity and discussion sessions over the two days designed to link, leverage, and align resources to enhance safety initiatives you are pursuing.  
  • Presentations on new resources and tools to advance efforts aimed at campus resilience.
  • Findings from the DRU Network survey, and more.
